Curate Henry Butcher and Galeri Prima co-organise PARADOX, a solo exhibition by the talented multi-disciplinary artist Suhaidi Razi at Galeri Prima, Balai Berita Bangsar, from March 6 – April 5, 2017. The beautifully installed exhibition offers an important and comprehensive view of Suhaidi Razi’s rarely seen recent work from 2014 – 2017, providing collectors and art lovers with the opportunity to see this complex and deeply moving body of work. The exhibition comprises 30 works including paintings, sculptures, and mixed media, which presented together a critical reflection on the sign of our times, on both societal and human challenges.

Paradox dwells in the mind of Suhaidi Razi where he unfolds solace and misery, joy and pain, deeds and dreams in a journey called life. Layers of life are built upon conflicting issues spread on canvas of impossibilities. Though life is short, the journey is long, and the path is paved with paradox.

Through the use of symbolism and arbitrary associations among objects, the paintings in this exhibition reveal psychological complexity and internal contradictions. The latest painting titled Afternoon In The Kitchen (2017) is deeply inspired by traditional still life genre of the 17th century. The composition shows a pair of roosters in the midst of battle contrasted by soft organic forms in the background, illustrating the artist’s continued experimentation and ongoing refinement in technique.

Most appealing, among the most recent series of work consists of several notebook sketches in mix media, offering a diaristic and intimate approach in presentation. The imagery of nature runs through much of his latest work, different species of birds rendered in monochromatic colours juxtaposed in hand written texts create an ever-present sense of mystery. In the process, different ideas clash with one another and could be viewed as a poignant study on the transience and fragility of human life.

Among the outstanding works in the show are the celebrated metal sculptures of horses and imaginative hybrids of clawed feet and mollusk. Beyond the elegant rusted metal fragments, each sculpture pays homage to the labour and culture of farming communities. The themes of hope in the future, power and mobility are intrinsic to the artist’s most memorable horse sculptures.

The exhibition runs from March 6 to April 5, opens daily from 10 am to 6 pm (Sundays by appointment only). For more information, contact 016-273 3628.
