Curate Henry Butcher is pleased to present a private selling exhibition from 8 August – 8 September. The exhibition features exquisite works celebrating the diversity of form, variety and magnitude of Malaysian and Southeast Asian artists, providing a brief overview of currents in Malaysian art for the past 60 years, with the earliest work dated 1954 by pioneer artist Peter Harris, founder of Wednesday Art Group. The works are sourced from collectors and maintain good provenance.
Museum quality work painted by Kuo Ju Ping, titled My Daughter Playing Piano is a sensitive portrayal of Kuo Ju Ping’s daughter. The work is documented in published literature by the Penang State Art Gallery. A further highlight of the exhibition includes a stunning painting titled Movement And Relativity by master symbolist John Lee Joo For. The horse, which is known to be the artist’s iconic trademark, signifies beauty and spirit of life. Visible in the work is also an image of a couple, united in one emotion. Khaw Sia’s forte orchid, and Tew Nai Tong’s forte nude, are poised to catch the attention of the audiences too.
Beyond the works of established artists, the exhibition also concentrates on the younger generation of artists who are further developing their achievements in contemporary art. Particularly worth mentioning among the younger generations are Sabihis Md Pandi (winner of UOB Art Award, Malaysia Emerging Artist Award, Young Guns Award), award-winning Shafiq Nordin and Ahmad Hisyamuddin Abdullah, Aely Manaf, Ismail Alwi, etc. The works of the younger artists are mostly drawn from narratives and pictorial symbols which express their views on contemporary society and existence.
Abstract art on the other hand allows interpretations of reality drawn from the artist’s experience through shapes, colours and lines. Exemplary of this artistic genre within the exhibition are works by artists such as Raphael Scott Ahbeng, Nizar Kamal Ariffin, Raduan Man, Zainal Abidin Musa, etc.
Regional works in the exhibition consists of works by renowned Indonesian artist Nyoman Gunarsa whose works are profoundly inspired by Balinese culture, Filipino contemporary artist Kirby Roxas, Thai artist Kedsuda Loogthong, Singaporean artist Rofi Zaino, etc.
